Assessment 1 – Book Review The book to be reviewed is Rubenstein, J. (2015) Between Samaritans and States: The Political Ethics of Humanitarian INGOs, Oxford University Press, Oxford.

In writing the book review you are expected to demonstrate:

1. strong understanding of the content of the book, and appreciation of its strengths and limitations;

2. evidence of reading one or, at most, two other relevant books (so grounding your evaluation of the book). (You should not use articles, reports, or any materials other than books.);

3. the ability to write concisely and with coherence and clarity;

4. the ability to reach a well-grounded and authoritative position regarding the book.

Reviews that demonstrate insight, originality, and command on the part of the author will have added value.

Your review should provide a reader who has no knowledge of the book with an excellent appreciation of its content, together with its strengths and weaknesses. You should draw on and reference the work of the authors of the review book and the additonal books, but you should not use quotes. You are strongly advised to check your work for typographical errors, spelling errors, and grammatical errors before submitting the work for assessment. Formatting requirements Review essays should be 1500 – 2000 words in length (including bibliography). Pages should be numbered. Font should be TNR 12. Spacing should be 1.5 minimum. Pages should not be printed back-to-back. Endnotes/Footnotes should not be used. The Harvard referencing system is to be applied. Detailed instructions can be found on the web.
