Behavioralism

Creating a Foundation for Understanding Learning

[WLOs: 3, 4, 5] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 5]

Prior to completing this activity, read the introduction and Chapter 1 in your required text, and view the video B.F. Skinner – Operant Conditioning and Free WillLinks to an external site..

Critically thinking about the material presented in the courses you are taking can be challenging, especially when we believe that we already have a robust understanding of the domain. For example, you may, at this point in your academic career, have already studied behaviorism, so you may believe you already have a deep understanding of what this theory is. However, consider the theory based on learning. The foundations of behaviorism suggest that we learn, not based on thought, but on physiological needs. This foundation was based on radical behaviorism, a sub-theory. Critically consider the evolution of behaviorism, and apply this to the following prompts.

To successfully complete this journal:

  • Take the pre-test in Chapter 1: The Foundations of Behaviorism in your required text. Discuss your results.
  • Discuss why the multiple sub-theories and frameworks of behaviorism can be confusing based on their differing suggestions.
  • Give real-life examples of association doctrine and connectionism, and explain the two differing aspects of each.
  • Compare and contrast the stimulus-response (S-R) model and the law of effect (S-O-R) and how the inclusion of a confirming reaction changes the model. Why does it matter?
  • Outline the historical evolution of behaviorism suggested by its sub-theories (e.g. molar, radial, and psychological behaviorism).
  • Summarize any takeaways that you have developed about behaviorism, including its sub-theories, based on the content this week and explain how this evolution supported cognitivism.

Once you have finished writing, consider running the tool Turnitin (found in your Course Resources tab) to assure you have successfully used your own voice, rather than another author’s.

Your journal this week should be 700 to 900 words and have an introduction and a conclusion as described in the Writing Center’s resource Introductions & ConclusionsLinks to an external site.. You should exhibit obvious attention to critical thought and understanding of the content, as demonstrated in TED-Ed Animation 5 Tips to Improve Your Critical ThinkingLinks to an external site..

You should include APA citations as needed to support your ideas (see APA: Citing Within Your PaperLinks to an external site. for assistance). As this is your personal reflection about the material this week, your journal should limit the use of quoted material. Proper grammar should be applied, for which you should consider using the Writing Center’s GrammarlyLinks to an external site. resource. At minimum, cite your text to support your assertions within your explanation, but you may also use additional scholarly sources. The Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible SourcesLinks to an external site. table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. References should be listed following the reflection. You will have until 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 (Monday) to deliver this journal reflection.
