Is there a specific focus to your essay?
You will select an organization to analyse using the conceptual tools provided in this course. It can be the company you aspire to work for, or a company for which you have worked, a public sector organisation, an NGO (non-governmental organisation such as Oxfam). The individual assignment will be your analysis of that organisation.
Selecting an Organisation
Select an organisation in which you have a strong personal interest. For example, select an organisation in which you already work, or might be interested in working after graduation, or an organisation that is a very significant player in a sector in which you work or plan to work (e.g. a dominant firm). If you have ambitions to become an entrepreneur, you might want to select a growing entrepreneurial organisation. You are not required to interview but you must cite your data sources.
Analysing the Organisation
You should use publicly available information to begin your analysis: the organisation’s Web site is often the best starting point. Remember, however, that you are using the Web site as a source of data for the analysis; do not simply copy material off the Web site. Your assignment is an analysis, not a data-dump. In addition, the Factiva, FT.com, Wall Street Journal, or Lexis-Nexis database provides useful material on many organisations.
Guiding Questions
To structure your assignment you could pay attention to two questions:
Question 1:
Describe your chosen organisation paying specific attention to (a) its value proposition- how customers define excellence when it comes to your offering (b) how the firm is currently organised to deliver that excellence paying attention to its culture and covering aspects such as how the teams are organised, how organisation is structured, how performance is measured and incentives, and what are the leadership/management styles?
Question 2:
Drawing upon the lessons from the course, outline the recommendations you would like to make to the board of your chosen organisation to (a) strengthen excellence in your value proposition in both home and/or global markets and (b) organise your firm better to deliver that excellence (IE. culture, team and organisation structure, leadership/management you covered in the first question). While making your recommendations, clearly outline which area would you like to maintain as it is and which one’s require fundamental changes. You will also need to point out how you would launch any change initiative associated with your recommendations
Important: Your report has to read as a concise management report, which you should be confident to read as a senior manager yourself or be ready to be presented to your executive board.
Use of Appendix for referring to figures and tables is optional and does not count towards word limit.
Any tables, graphs, diagrams should be referenced.
You will be assessed on (a) the depth of insight (b) justification of your argument, and (c) quality of course content application.
