Examine a particular issue Canadian or international business history

Option 1:  Case Study: 

This is a minimum 8-page case study (that is, eight pages of text, not including footnotes/endnotes, title page, bibliography or any appendix) which will use at least 8 book or article sources to examine a particular case in global or Canadian business history. The subject of the case can come from either an event discussed during the course, or found in the course materials, or be based upon an original case topic developed by the student in consultation with your instructor. Case topic selection will be determined on a first come basis.  ALL case topics must be approved by the instructor.

How do you approach this Assignment? It is important that students develop a clear argument/thesis statement for their paper which illustrates the level of research they have conducted, and a clear formulation of a particular point of view, one that follows a traditional business case approach (examples can be found in the Relentless Change textbook). This Assignment allows students to conduct research (utilizing books and articles, newspaper articles, statistical data) and formulate a case that askes fundamental questions about the incident/event/issue under examination. 

 

 

Option 2:  Research Essay

Option 3 is a minimum 8 page research paper (that is, eight pages of text, not including footnotes/endnotes, title page, bibliography or any appendix) which will use at least 8 book or article sources (including any book that students may have done for Option 1 in Assignment One previously in the course) to examine a particular issue Canadian or international business history.  The subject matter of the essay can come from course lectures, readings, or an aspect of the syllabus, or be based upon an original essay topic developed by the student in consultation with your instructor.  A student choosing this Option must consult the instructor to pick their Research Topic.

 

How do you approach this Assignment?  In this Option, it is important that students develop a clear argument/thesis statement for their paper which illustrates the level of research they have conducted, and a clear formulation of a particular point of view.   As a traditional essay Option, this Assignment allows students to conduct research (utilizing books and articles) and formulate an argument that addresses one aspect of the history of capitalism, or Canadian or international business history.
