Identity and Madness in Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘King Lear’

words), chapter 3 (2400 words), conclusion (500 words).

Please give each chapter a heading ­ don’t order these by text, but by what issue is being addressed/

what questions are being answered.

The Introduction ­ the theme. Historical background. Overview of the literature and current issues an

debate. Aspects examined/ research question(s). Methodology and Materials. Structure of the

remainder of the dissertation.

Chapter 1: the literature. Analysis. Interpretation of analysis with regards to the overall research

question(s)

Chapter 3: as above

Conclusion: synthesis of analysis in relation to research question(s).

Each chapter should be structured like an essay with an introduction, setting out what the chapter

will achieve in relation to the overall research question, and a conclusion where this is reiterated in

the light of evidence.

Please use a variety of sources, engaging with the key critics in this area. Two books my tutor

suggested I start with are: ‘Madness and Drama in the Age of Shakespeare’ by Duncan Salkeld, and

‘Distracted subjects: madness and gender in Shakespeare and Early Modern culture’ by Carol Thomas
