Objectives
1. To produce an interactive map, beyond the default mapbox interaction (zoom and pan), that supports your clear and valid data story;
2. To use the techniques, principles and software learned during the course and lab sessions;
3. To show your ability to design in terms of the core principles of interactive design, cartography and data graphics.
In a nutshell…
Your task is to design and produce an interactive map that tells a story about a public data set of thousands of tree species in Melbourne
(data source* (https://data.melbourne.vic.gov.au/Environment/Trees-with-species-and-dimensions-Urban-Forest-/fp38-wiyy) ). You should
explore the contents of the data set and display the data graphically using the core principles of interactive design, data graphics and
cartography you have learned during the course. Your resulting map should contain a map, which fills the screenspace and has some form of
interaction beyond the basic mapbox interaction (i.e. pan + zoom). The map must communicate a clear message about your data to an audience
of Melbourne city residents.
* import the raw .csv file into mapbox, as you would a geojson file. Mapbox will automatically handle the geocoding of the points as it recognises
the latitude and longitude columns on import.
The fine print…
This is an individual assessed exercise, which you can start in the supervised lab session and continue in your own time.
Refer to the exercises from Labs 4-6 and combine, adapt and build upon these to design and create your own interactive map, containing at
least one form of novel interaction. Remember to assess your data graphic critically with reference to the principles of interaction design, as well
as cartography and data graphics learned in the course, and iteratively redesign your map to improve it.
For the assignment you must submit two files:
sXXXXXX_index.html – your single html document including all your html and javascript
sXXXXXX_style.css – your css style sheet used by your html file
Your files must follow the above naming conventions, where XXXXXX is your RMIT student ID number.
Your submission must contain exactly one .html and one .css file. We are not able to accept additional files, so please restrict yourself to what is
achievable within that constraint.
In the submission area you need to upload these as two separate files and submit them together at one time using the ‘+ add’ another
file option. Please note that you can update and resubmit your assignment files (but always submit the two together) as many times as you like
before the deadline.
Remember to explicitly refer to your css file in your html <head> (see highlighted in orange in the template here).
Your submitted files MUST:
fully load* and fill the web browser with a map;
work for any anonymous user, i.e., without requiring any special passwords or logins;
present at least one feature type from the urban tree dataset on the map (available here: data source
(https://data.melbourne.vic.gov.au/Environment/Trees-with-species-and-dimensions-Urban-Forest-/fp38-wiyy) );
contain code to incorporate map interaction which supports your data story (note: this must be beyond the default mapbox interaction of
zoom/pan);
contain your name and student ID (see in the template here);
contain comments in the code which highlight your key functionality and innovations;
use an appropriate, potentially custom basemap style;
have a clear and precise title;
credit the data source; and
contain other relevant map furniture where appropriate, e.g., a legend.
Ensure that your develop a clean, simple design; abide by the principles of interaction, cartography, and data graphics covered in class;

The map may incorporate any additional spatial data used for the lab sessions or from other data sources (e.g., from Melbourne Data
(https://data.melbourne.vic.gov.au/data) or Victorian Data (https://www.data.vic.gov.au/) ) subject to the assignment rules (e.g., must load
from a single html file with accompanying css for an anonymous user).
You are responsible for ensuring that your submitted files work as expected. We strongly advise that you forward the files to a friend or relative
to double check that they open on a different computer. Some browsers will not perform in exactly the same way, so you should be sure
your assignment works as expected using Chrome version 60 (such as on MyDesktop).
Assessment
This practical exercise is worth 25% of the final grade. The assignment is marked out of a total of 100 points, under the following grading
criteria:
Submission (10%): correct number of files submitted, with specified file names, fully working code, comments and indentation.
Design (40%): interaction, data density, and aesthetics.
Story (20%): data integrity and correspondence.
Technical (30%): innovation and complexity.
