Neoliberalism in 21st century

Task 3: Key Concepts Assignment – Neoliberalism in 21st century

Purpose

This task will provide you with an opportunity to both develop and demonstrate your understanding of the central concepts and themes associated with neoliberal approaches to governance, and provide a pivotal point to integrate your understanding of recent developments of the western welfare system.

The Task – referenced this time!

Mini-essays that are not referenced appropriately and/or do not include page numbers in in-text references, or that do not use sources only from the Course Reader, may attract a fail grade (see note on Referencing below).

 For this assignment, you will prepare a mini-essay for each of the three topics below.

Each of your three mini-essays will each:

  • be 750 words;
  • have a very brief introductory thesis statement at the start;
  • use and explain the required key terms;
  • be based on sound academic research comprising at least four sources from the Course Reader (you may use a source for more than one mini-essay, but the cumulative total of sources must be a minimum of 12 different ones);
  • be properly referenced including page numbers in in-text references;
  • have its own reference list, directly following the relevant mini-essay (not included in word count).

Marking criteria

  • The required and other relevant key concepts/ideas are clearly and accurately explained;
  • Strong and accurate depth of understanding is demonstrated;
  • Information and ideas are clearly expressed; written in appropriate academic writing style;
  • Research sources are well-chosen and used well; correct in-text referencing/reference list format;
  • Conformity with word length.

The detailed marking criteria can be found below, and will be useful in the preparation of your assignment. Keep in mind that how well you write your responses is a factor in how well you can demonstrate your understanding.

Assignment presentation

  • Write out the full question directly above your response (you may change the order of the topics), and the relevant reference list directly below each response;
  • Use 12 pt Times New Roman or Arial font;
  • 5 line spacing;
  • Allow 30mm margins to allow for marker’s comments.

Tips for how to do the assignment

First step: you are encouraged to use the self-learning strategies that we have been practicing in the tutorials to develop an initial draft response to the topics – ensuring you include the required key terms.

Second step: re-read the Required Readings (assuming you have been keeping up to date with the readings), to find discussion in the readings that supports or corrects your own early thinking. That is, avoid ‘treasure-hunting’ (seeking the magic single sentence or so which ‘answers’ the question) as this strategy tends to provide only superficial responses and can lead you astray.

Third step: Continue re-drafting (and going back through sources when necessary) until you have a coherent, comprehensive, and accurate assignment, which is properly referenced and set out!

TOPICS

Prepare a mini-essay for each of the three (3) topics below (750 +/-10% words each). Remember to reference them and include a SEPARATE reference list for each one  – and don’t forget to reference).

The mini-essays are likely to overlap to a small extent. You may change the order of the questions (ensure you place the question directly above your mini-essays).

In choosing how to respond to each topic, be mindful of what you have said or plan to say in the other mini-essays, to ensure you cover a wide range of issues and do not unduly repeat yourself or leave significant gaps.
