The first part: Research summaries

Concisely and accurately describe the search strategy used to identify the journal articles related to cancer related chronic (e.g. Journal data bases used, keywords, limitation applied (e.g. years, language, peer reviewed))

Four summaries of current peer-reviewed journal articles (2010 to 2015) (from prestige journals) relevant to cancer related chronic pain that will contribute to the following literature review. Each summary has about 350 words.

Each summary should adopt the following structure.

  1. Article citation (APA 6):
  2. Type of article: (Quantitative or Qualitative research/Literature review/case study etc.)
  3. What is the purpose of the article? (What question/problem are the authors trying to address? Hypotheses if relevant)
  4. What data or evidence do the author/s use to support the hypothesis or purpose? (What kind of data – literature, case notes, qualitative and/or quantitative data etc.)
  5. Outline the key points identified in the article (in your own words).
  6. What conclusions did the authors make? (in your own words).
  7. Rationale for choosing this article. (Why is this relevant to your following literature review

Marking criteria

Journal article appropriate and relevant to the topic for the literature review.

Correct APA 6 style for citation.

Demonstrates an excellent understanding of the purpose, key points and conclusions related to the chosen article.

Clear rationale for choice of the article with an appropriate depth.

Writing was coherent with logical development of key ideas.

Example part one:

  1. Article citation (APA 6):

Bornman, T., Piper, B, F., Koczywas, M., Munevar, C, M., Sun, V., Uman, G, C., & Ferrell, B, R. (2012). A qualitative analysis of cancer-related fatigue in ambulatory oncology. Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, 16, 26-32.

  1. Type of article: (Quantitative research/Qualitative research/Literature review/case study etc.)

Qualitative research

  1. What is the purpose of the article? (What question/problem are the authors trying to address? Hypotheses if relevant)

The purpose of this study was to describe patient’s perceptions of the cause, relief, related symptoms, meaning, and suffering secondary to cancer-related fatigue.

  1. What data or evidence do the author/s use to support the hypothesis or purpose? (What kind of data – literature, case notes, qualitative and/or quantitative data etc.)

The author used qualitative data, literature review and case study to support the purpose.

  1. Outline the key points identified in the article (in your own words).

1  According to National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s (NCCN) evidence-based guidelines, Cancer-  Related Fatigue is a subjective symptoms experienced by patients with cancer, which is described by patients with ongoing and overwhelming  physical, psychological and/or cognitive tiredness. This tiredness is different from the fatigue experienced by a health person which can  be easily  relieved by rest or a good night sleep.

2 Cancer-related fatigue is described by patients as a distressing, lethargic and continuing symptoms, which has an negative impact on patients’ social life.

3 The meaning of cancer-related fatigue to a person’s functional and emotional well-being is significant. Patients report feelings of loss of control of their lives, dependent on others, inability to function normally, and loss of enjoyment of doing daily activities.

4 Suffering from cancer-related fatigue include a sense of loss, impaired ability to do join entertainments and social activities, and a sense of hopeless.

5 Cancer-related fatigue should be assessed from a multidimensional aspect in clinical settings in order to understand the meaning and suffering of patients with cancer-related fatigue.

6 Implications for oncology nursing practice:

1)  It is important, as a nurse, to recognize patients can gain meaning from their journey of cancer.

2) It is nurses’ responsibility to facilitate patients to understand meaning of their diseases and symptoms, for example, cancer-related fatigue.

3) Patients’ ability to extract the meaning from their diseases can be impaired by their suffering from CRF.

  1. What conclusions did the authors make? (in your own words).

Cancer-related fatigue is a complicated condition and many factors can contribute to it. The condition has an impact on all aspects of patient’s quality of life including physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being. The severity and impact of cancer-related fatigue should be assessed and measured on a daily basis in clinical practice and research setting. Oncology nurses need to further understand this condition in order to provide optimal care to patients with cancer.

  1. Rationale for choosing this article. Why is this relevant to your following literature review?

This article studied the meaning and suffering of patients with cancer-related fatigue, which is from the patients’ perspective to look at the impact of this condition. Therefore, it can help oncology nurses identify the care needs of those patients and it can guide nurses to assess cancer-related fatigue of patients from those aspects. It can also help nurses implement interventions tailored to patients care needs and evaluate the results.

The literature review should be structured in the following way:

Introduction to the topic. The cancer-related chronic pain should be clearly stated in the introduction of the literature review.

Review the current literature concerning the cancer related chronic pain:

– A brief discussion of the pathophysiology of cancer related chronic pain in your specific patient context (no more than 250 words);

– A discussion of relevant assessment tools and assessment of the symptom;

– A discussion of nursing interventions relevant to cancer related chronic pain for the chosen patient context;

– A brief discussion on how the efficacy of the interventions can be evaluated. Conclusion

PLEASE NOTE:

  1. A review of the literature is not an essay. The purpose of this literature review is to critically analyse existing works in the assessment nursing management related to cancer related chronic pain. The literature you identify must be considered insightfully and then synthesised into a convincing presentation which clearly articulates the current perspectives on the topic.

  3. At least 25 current and authoritative references (APA 6) which should be peer reviewed journal articles from 2010 to 2015.
  4. Your review should focus on nursing application of the assessment and nursing management related to cancer related chronic pain. A literature review aims to:

– Group authors who come to similar conclusions;

– Compare and contrast groups of authors (or single authors) with others;

– Criticise the studies, for example, on methodological grounds;

– Clarify the main issues for the reader;

– Note areas of disagreement;

– Highlight exemplary studies;

– Highlight gaps in knowledge;

– Conclude with a summary of the literature.

Marking criteria

  • Introduction succinctly identifies the relevance, scope and focus of the review.
  • Body well structured, with coherent & logical development of ideas.
  • Conclusion identifies what has been written on the topic and what needs to be done.
