Social Contexts in Professional Practice

TASK: You will need to select at least two social work theories, explain their main principles, strengths and limitations, how they support Anti Oppressive Practice, and explain how they apply to the assessment, planning and intervention in one of the below case study.

Mr Bigmore

Mr Bigmore is White British, and is 40 years old. He has a mild learning disability. He currently attends a local college on a part time basis. He lives in supported accommodation owned by Genesis Housing Association. As part of his support package, he has a support worker named Jenny who visits him once a week to help with his shopping and budgeting needs. He attends a local choir group as he enjoys singing and takes part in local choir events.

Genesis Housing Association has liaised with Jenny his support worker, as recently Mr Bigmore has been inviting guests to his room. When questioned about this, Mr Bigmore insists that they are people that he met at the choir.
One evening, noises could be heard coming from Mr Bigmore’s room. It appeared that some youths had broken into his room, and stolen money and valuables. A report was made to the Police, who picked up some of the youths, but Mr Bigmore is now in fear of his safety and is reluctant to attend college.
He says that he is “troubled” by the recent events and that he feels “scared” because “they’ve ruined my home that I love”.
